CHENNAI: It is a well-known fact that ace paddler G Sathiyan has been a big fan of actor-politician Kamal Haasan. However, not many will be aware that Kamal expressed interest to play a TT game with Sathiyan.
“I have been a fan of his right from the days of [his movie] ‘Mahanadhi’ and have watched so many of his movies right from ‘Aboorva Sagodharargal’ to ‘Dasavatharam’. I did bump into him at the Delhi airport once. Luckily, I was flying Business Class and I was in the lounge. When I looked around, I suddenly saw Kamal sir there. I went up to him and told him I was a big fan. He spoke very well, and when I told him I was an international table tennis player, he was delighted. He said ‘come, let’s have coffee’ and we spoke for 10 minutes. He said he liked table tennis a lot and said we should play a game sometime,” Sathiyan said during the chat show Homerun with AV with sports commentator Arun Venugopal on his YouTube channel Gethist Creative.
Kamal even went on to ask Sathiyan on how he developed interest in the sport.
“Kamal sir was also happy about how sportspersons from Tamil Nadu were pursuing sport as a professional career and were doing well enough to play in the Olympics. It was an absolute fanboy moment for me. He said we should meet again. I even got a call from Kamal sir’s office [asking if I could come], but I was in Germany then and couldn’t make it. He said the next time we should have a nice, long discussion, and play a TT match,” said Sathiyan.
